Time to meet another one of our co-workers: Legal Counsel Joakim Raivio! What do you do for work? – The role of legal counsel at the SCC is very varied. On the one hand, I’m responsible for the arbitration cases in Division 1, which includes making various procedural decisions and coordinating the arbitrations together with the parties and the arbitral tribunals. On the other hand, I spend a lot of time doing work that is not case-related, such as organising events, drafting reports, and giving presentations. I often encounter complicated legal questions and problems in my work, and I really enjoy seeing how these questions and problems contribute to the development of the SCC's practice and rules. What’s something you didn’t know about the SCC before you started working with us? – I was surprised to see how the SCC can be such an extremely efficient and productive arbitration institute despite having a relatively small number of employees. I think one of the key factors behind this is how the work is divided among the staff. Everything is very well organised, and the teamwork is excellent. I also really appreciate how international our team is. And finally, what’s your dream travel destination? – There are so many of them, but I would love to go on a long scuba diving trip to Fiji or another remote tropical island. I also enjoy travelling in Europe, especially to Germany and Austria.
